The Hilo Orchid Society recently awarded University of Hawaii at Hilo senior Bishop “Jed” Akao with the 2016-17 Yasuji Takasaki Memorial Scholarship.

After working as a research assistant in pathology and genetics under Dr. Susan Miyasaka at the Komohana Research Extension Center and studying tissue culture in Dr. Michael Tanabe’s class, Akao envisions a possible future in Hawaii’s orchid/floriculture industry.

The scholarship pays $1,500 per term to deserving UH-Hilo students and is named after Yasuji Takasaki, one of the founders of Hawaii’s orchid-growing industry.

For the fall 2016 term, Akao is attending Chico State University in California as part of a national student exchange.
